“Why wait?”

“Why wait?” Paper collage, 2021.

we’re well-suited for decay. in less time than it
takes to say this, i’ll have penciled in
	the image of a garden
and replaced it with
a facsimile of the moon

a bodiless path that leads
	wherever i choose

my mind’s asleep
	on a bed of goldfish
and i am a white hot electric eel in the sand
not afraid of this body
	or its imaginary gardens

therefore
you should love me and
wake me in the same moment
as a mantra borrowed
	from a bluebird’s nest

but what am i saying?
	*my eyes fall
catastrophically silent*

  1. “therefore you should love me and wake me in the same moment as a mantra borrowed from a bluebird’s nest”…oh to be loved and aware in a moment…fragile as a “mantra from a bluebird’s nest”…sought after by all of us…”my eyes fall catastrophically silent”…to look in another’s eyes and see this kind of silence is heartbreaking…and reveals something that words cannot…really good, my friend.

    1. Thank you so much. It was the look on the woman’s face and her body position that moved me to create the collage. I think she is at once fragile, longing, uncertain, and full of wonder, and I enjoyed creating a little story around her.

  2. The collage joins the poem in a reminder of the temporary nature of human life. So brief, we hover in time a moment before we’re gone. Before you can decide you want it, it’s no longer an option.
