Self-Portrait with Machine No. 2, paper collage, 2022
I have multiple new collages to share with you, but I think Self-Portrait with Machine No. 2 deserves her own space. Indeed, some of you may remember Self-Portrait with Machine from last year. Both of these self-portraits are among my favorite–and among the most personally meaningful–collages I’ve made to date.

Although I don’t generally care to analyze my own work, this time I had to ask myself, what is “the machine,” and what is its relationship to me? My instinctive response to this question–literally, the first thing that came to mind–was the Pink Floyd song, “Welcome To the Machine”.
I chuckled to myself and thought, there might be something to that. And in fact, upon further contemplation, I think so. The machine in these portraits is, to me, the human machine. It is both inside and outside: society and our psychological predilections. The machine is “out there”. The machine is also in my head.
Welcome my son
Welcome to the machine
What did you dream?
It’s alright we told you what to dream
