Birds of Winter, Part IV

Eastern Bluebird (female)

I’ve been going through a lot of bird seed this winter. When I say “a lot,” I mean about 55 lbs of seed per month plus suet. That may not be a lot for everyone, but it is for me. It’s almost double the amount of food I went through last winter.

When it’s cold outside, flocks of sparrows, finches, and doves descend on my feeders, sometimes in large numbers. And they eat a lot. (Interesting fact: birds eat so much in the wintertime because their metabolism increases when it’s cold outside. That’s how they stay warm.) I included some photographs here of the little flocks of sparrows and finches who’ve been visiting lately.

I also discovered yesterday that I have a new visitor to the backyard: a Northern Mockingbird. I first spotted him/her using the bath and again a few hours later grabbing a snack at the feeder.

Among my favorite photographs here are the mockingbird, Purple Finches, a Chipping Sparrow, goldfinches, and Mourning Doves. Please enjoy.

  1. It’s because you made your backyard so very welcoming, that you’d been blessed, by these various species of birds that visited, and, those extra bags of bird seeds are, more than worth it, because you get to see all these, beautiful creatures of nature.

    • You are absolutely right! I do consider it a blessing that I get to see so many birds everyday. And I am happy they enjoy the food and the space I’ve created for them. Thank you for commenting!
