Skyway, paper collage, 2023
I wasn’t quite happy with the artwork I posted earlier this week. It was OK, I suppose, but it wasn’t what I would have liked. I posted it because I assumed I wouldn’t be making any more artwork this week. And that’s alright, I thought. Some weeks are like that.
What I didn’t anticipate was sitting down earlier yesterday evening to make a “quick” collage and ending up with five compositions that I really like in a very short amount of time. And today, coming up with several more.
An observation: I can spend hours and hours and hours toiling over a series of images and coming up empty–or settling for compositions that are “just OK” but that remain, to me, somehow lackluster. Or I can wait for an “a-ha” moment–a moment in which the images seem to come together of their own accord. That is to say, until the composition is effortless. Because, for me, the most satisfying (and the most playful) compositions are almost always effortless.
Here’s some music to go with this batch of artwork. Please enjoy.

I loved it’s time to grow up son, but the housekeeper one is very kafkaesque 😄 I loved it the most. A postmodern take on the whole apple embedded in the back of a bug thing.

Ha I didn’t make that connection. Now you’ve given me a different way of looking at that piece. Thank you!

Another great collection of collages 🙂 We are so often our own toughest critic but submitting work anyway is such a good thing to do. Often what we assume is “average” connects with another who feels quite differently 🙂 But I do agree with you…my most satisfying work is the effortless kind. The moments when the words just spill out..aha moments that seem to come from a place even beyond me. Keep up the fantastic work! It’s always a joy to view your collages!

Well said, and thank you, my friend! Those moments in which words/images seem to come from a place “beyond” us are always the most wonderful. 🙂
