A Life, In Order

what does it mean to live a life?
wash teeth. organize. set water to the plants.

mimic this order for-ever and ever.
make the walls sing, this i know, and dance while you cook,
tossing salt over your left shoulder as you go

have patience, rise gratefully, and stir slowly
—the cosmos are listening

do laundry as stars fold into the night,
weightlessly and with infinite possibility

move the way of sunflowers, that is, tilt ever so lightly
towards the unfathomable
make beauty the way God makes rain
and listen to the wrens, they have much to say.

all of this will happen again and again
before dawn breaks its borders and the machines
hum to life

but not before the spider devours her web,
leaving no trace
of that solitary presence outside our door
protecting us while we slept

  3. This one is beaming with the extraordinary inside the everyday activities we take for granted. And gives us a magic, even a cosmic significance to our routines. Well done.

    1. Thank you, Bob! The other day, the question “What does it mean to live a life?” popped into my mind. And I thought, that’s a pretty good question…what does that mean? I thought it might be fun to try and answer it.

  4. I love this poem! So so beautiful…each paragraph is its own gift..the sunflowers tilting, God found in the rain, the spider devouring her web, tossing the salt and dancing as you cook..all so beautiful..if we just “have patience, rise gratefully, and stir slowly—the cosmos are listening”..indeed… listen with gratitude and patience and the magic of life will unfold right before you..terrific poem, my friend..I’m printing it out and posting it in my home today 🙂
