Sea View & Other Art

Sea View, paper collage, 2025

I recently scooped up a vintage book of undersea photographs at a local antique shop. The backdrop of Sea View is my favorite image in that book. In fact, it’s actually a two-page spread. In the image above, I edited the final scanned collage to remove the center seam where the two pages meet. That isn’t something I normally do. Indeed, it’s rare that I digitally edit my collage art, especially in a significant way. But in this case, I felt the seam was too distracting and that it may actually detract from the composition.

I don’t know, though. It might just be me. I may have been so focused on the seam–so fixed on determing whether or not it was distracting–that it was all I could see. (I hate when that happens.) It’s also possible, I think, that the seam could give the collage more of a handmade feel. I’m torn; so, I thought I’d ask you all for some feedback. I love Sea View and would like to have prints made and added to my Etsy shop. Which version should I use–edited or unedited? I’m not particularly attached to either version, so feel free to be honest.

Thanks in advance. I hope you enjoy these experiments in collage art.

Untitled, paper collage, 2025. This is what I call a “warm up collage”. It’s the first collage of many that I make in a single session. In this case, I created all of the collages in this post yesterday, and this one was the first. My warm up collage is often a little rough, and I almost never share it because I don’t think the quality is there. But, this one isn’t too bad, and I thought it might be worth sharing as a glimpse into my process–and a reminder that our art doesn’t need to be perfect. In fact, it doesn’t need to be anything other than what we want it to be.

  1. Dang, these are all awesome. I prefer the seamless first image. The fact you created all of these in a day is outright amazing. You have a knack for this type of art.

  3. I absolutely love Sea View! There’s something so quietly expansive about it, like the moment just before a memory forms. Personally, I think removing the seam helps the eye travel across the collage without interruption, which really suits the underwater feel. That seamlessness draws you in deeper, almost like being pulled gently by a current. While the original texture has its own handmade charm, the edited version feels more immersive to me. I’d definitely lean toward that for prints. Also, each collage is absolutely stunning! πŸ’«

  5. So I love your “warm up collage’”! There is something about it that speaks to me..the cowboy feel with the dusk infused light upon the water horizon..so lovely..I’d love a copy actually πŸ™‚ You’re “warm up” is splendid my friend. And I also really like shuffleboard one! A couple pushing a disc on a floor with a galaxy πŸ™‚

And honestly, with “Sea View”, I like the seam πŸ™‚ it’s like two worlds represented, yet cohesive. Yes, the seam draws your eye..but then, it becomes a seamless door, that’s in the distance, asking us to swim to πŸ™‚ Really perfect actually..
