The Long Trail Home & Other Art

The Long Trail Home, paper collage, 2026

Here are some new experiments in collage art. A few fun facts about my process:

  1. I always listen to classic rock music while collaging–usually 80s rock. Duran Duran, Heart, Van Halen, Christopher Cross, Fleetwood Mac, Sting, and Roxy Music are all favorites.
  2. My workspace is complete mayhem. I am typically a pretty tidy person, but not when I’m collaging. I can almost never find the materials I’m looking for, and I am constantly losing tiny people and other small scraps (and cursing out loud about it). My magazines also somehow end up strewn all over the floor. I lose all sense of time and space, and I often forget to eat.
  3. I have a quirky habit: before I finalize a composition, I lay it out on my cutting mat and then surround it on all sides with pieces of white paper. Why? Because I feel like I can’t see the composition clearly until I remove all background noise.

I hope you enjoy these experiments in collage art.

  3. This collection is great..and thank you for sharing your process…I especially hear you on needing a clear boundary of white in order to take in your final product. There is something to bareness, simplicity, clear boundary that declutters the mind so that you can “see” every part of your creation. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you, my friend! That boundary is an essential part of my process. ๐Ÿ˜Š
